NHI–Government of Uttarakhand Partnership, Base Hospital Almora (2016–2019)
National Heart Institute’s CSR outreach reflects its commitment to making quality healthcare accessible beyond hospital boundaries. Through strategic partnerships, rural health camps, school health initiatives and community awareness programmes, NHI brings preventive, diagnostic and specialist services to underserved populations. These efforts support early detection, timely treatment and greater awareness of health and well-being.
Strengthening Cardiac Care in Kumaon
Between 2016 and 2019, NHI partnered with the Government of Uttarakhand to strengthen cardiac services at Base Hospital Almora. The Public–Private Partnership addressed a critical need for accessible cardiac assessment, emergency treatment and specialist care for communities across the Kumaon region.
Under this initiative, a fully functional Cardiac Centre was established with a Coronary Care Unit (CCU), echocardiography and Treadmill Test (TMT) facilities. These services enabled cardiac evaluation, continuous monitoring of critically ill patients and timely management of cardiac emergencies within the government hospital.
Specialist Care Closer to Home
For families in mountainous and remote areas, travelling to distant cities for medical care can involve considerable time and expense. By making essential cardiac services available at Almora, the programme helped reduce the need to travel for initial diagnosis and critical care, bringing specialist support closer to local communities.
Impact Through Timely Intervention
The availability of cardiac diagnostics, monitoring and emergency care supported earlier intervention for patients with acute coronary syndrome. The programme reported a reduction in mortality among these patients to approximately 5%, demonstrating the value of accessible cardiac care within the public healthcare system.
This partnership reflects NHI’s commitment to strengthening regional healthcare capacity and helping underserved communities access timely, quality treatment.
